History

Established in 1966, Cross Engineering Swansea Limited is a third-generation family business built on decades of knowledge, hardwork, and a commitment to quality.

The company was founded by Alun and Angela Looker, whose determination to build something of their own laid the foundations for what Cross Engineering is today.

Where It Began

Alun began his engineering career as an apprentice fitter and turner at ICI in 1956. After qualifying, he gained valuable experience across a range of roles, including maintenance and plant installation at 3M Gorseinon, a foreman position at INA Bearings, and time spent as an estimator at British Steel’s Machynys machine shop.

After returning to hands on engineering work at National Standard in Bynea, Alun made the decision alongside his wife Angela to start their own business.

Cross Engineering was established in 1966, initially operating from a small workshop at their home in Llanmorlais. Situated at a crossroads, this location inspired the company name, a name that has remained ever since.

Building the Business

Through hard work and dedication and an ethos to ‘make it happen’, the business quickly grew. In 1970, land was secured at Garngoch Common, where a purpose-built workshop was developed marking an important milestone in the company’s growth.

From there, Cross Engineering continued to go from strength to strength, building a reputation for reliability, precision, and dependable service across a wide range of industries.

A key part of that success has been the strength and experience of the team. Andrew Phillips, now Works Director, has been with the company for nearly 40 years, playing a vital role in its day-to-day operations and maintaining the high standards Cross Engineering is known for.

Continuing the Legacy

Following Alun’s passing, the business was taken on by his two nephews, Rob Mellor and David Jeffreys.

Rob had worked within Cross Engineering from apprentice through to Works Foreman, bringing extensive operational knowledge and experience. David, with a background in construction and commercial management, had long supported the business as a trusted advisor particularly during key developments such as expanding facilities and investing in new capabilities, including waterjet cutting.

Together, they continued to run the business, maintaining its stability and reputation during a period of transition and the Covid Pandemic.

A New Generation

With strong family ties and a lifelong connection to the business, David’s daughter Abigail joined Cross Engineering to help carry it forward into its next chapter. Bringing experience in events, logistics, and accountancy, Abigail introduced a fresh perspective while continuing the values the business was built upon.

Her sister Rebecca has also joined the business, reinforcing its status as a true family-run company, and Andrew’s deep operational knowledge continuing to underpin the workshop, the business blends continuity with a forward-looking approach.

Looking Ahead

Today, Cross Engineering Swansea Limited combines over 60 years of experience with modern engineering capability, including CNC machining, fabrication, and abrasive waterjet cutting.

While the business continues to evolve, its focus remains unchanged — delivering reliable, high-quality engineering solutions and building long-term relationships with customers.

Over 60 years on, that commitment continues to drive us forward.

“Built on experience, carried forward through generations.”
